Bersani wins against Mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi, during primary elections staged by centre-left parties to select a prime ministerial candidate – a person who will stand a good chance of replacing incumbent Mario Monti next year. Over three million people voted in a first round of elections on November 25. None of the five candidates reached the minimum 50-per-cent victory threshold, but Pier Luigi Bersani and Matteo Renzi qualified for Sunday’s second-round run-off.
